Organizational Commitment

DLH Corp. is committed to building a sustainable work environment by taking actions that conserve natural resources, reduce waste, and minimize pollution. We recognize that office-wide and individual-level actions have a large collective impact on the environment. Our goal is to seek ways to minimize our impact in a responsible way. We pledge to work with our clients, staff, property manager, and suppliers to make sustainable choices and reduce our impact. We plan to accomplish this by implementing solutions for reducing, reusing, and recycling resources in our operating practices every day.

Goals/Initiatives

Office Supplies

  • Plastic – Discontinue use whenever possible. Use biodegradable cleaning supplies and communicate to staff to provide their own plates and mugs instead of using disposable items.
  • Paper – Purchase paper that has 30% recycled content (beyond the minimum standard mandated by the FAR.)

Recycling and Waste Reduction

  • Provide and utilize centrally located bins for paper, mixed paper, aluminum, cardboard, and some forms of plastic.
  • Donate furniture for reuse to several non-profit agencies.
  • Ensure toner cartridges are routinely recycled.
  • Old DLH Corp-owned computer/telephone equipment – Recycle all PCs; now most are under lease and returned to vendor. In MD, NC and Atlanta, where an inventory still exists of old non-leased computers, they are donated to non-profits for reuse.
  • DLH Corp uses SSSence and DLH News to educate employees about the organizational recycling and waste reduction programs.
  • Provide reusable kitchenware (e.g. mugs, utensils, etc.) to replace the disposable ones.
  • Installed no touch, touchless faucets in all of our Facilities.

Paper Reduction

  • DLH uses paperless forms and procedures and continues to develop new electronic applications to reduce paper use. Examples include on-line travel request forms, time sheets, professional development applications, and benefits enrollment.
  • Paper Manuals – Current practice is to move to e-versions for software and hardware manuals.

Transportation and Travel

  • Telecommuting – DLH has policies and procedures in place to allow telecommuting.
  • Transportation Commuting Subsidies – In MD, approximately 110 employees use public transportation and receive up to $65.00 as a subsidy (in partnership with WMATA’s Smart Benefits program). Employees may obtain additional transit benefits through pre-taxpayroll deductions up to $205.00 per month, for a maximum of $270.00 per month.

Web and Teleconferencing to Reduce Travel

  • DLH has invested in resources to enhance web-based meetings. Many meetings routinely include participation by teleconference and video.
  • DLH has recently invested in Skype, Teams and connectivity that will greatly enhance MD, NC and Atlanta interconnectivity.

Community Service Committee

  • Participate in Adopt-A-Road and Adopt-A-Highway.
  • Toiletries for Shelters – We recycle toiletry items by contributing them to area shelters: Dorothy Day Place in Maryland, Calvary Women’s Shelter in D.C., Arlington/Alexandria Coalition for the Homeless in Virginia, and the Durham Crises Center.
  • Red Cross Blood Drives – DLH hosts two blood drives a year.

Education/Training

  • Introduce the Green Initiatives to current staff, new staff and continue meetings of Green Committee.
  • Introduce staff on how recycling and sustainable practices can benefit both the environment and the business.
  • Provide educational reminders for staff to turn off monitors at end of day.
