Leadership Academy intern, Lucille Filyaw, is building a model fishing trawler to educate others on the crisis of overfishing, including the wasteful types of fishing that exacerbates the problem, and highlight technology that can slow down and maybe even reverse the detrimental effects of overfishing. With technology like TEDs- a specialized device that allows a captured sea turtle to escape when caught in a fisherman’s net, without reducing the boat’s fish count.
Lucille visited ABC Imaging in March to work on a 3D-model of a boat as an innovative project for ocean conservation.
“I have always been drawn to our ocean and its complexity. That is why I am thrilled to be working on a project that educates others, on technology that can slow the effects we have on the ocean,” said Lucy. “I had a chance to meet the two people who have helped me execute this project: Jon and Larry at ABC Imaging and they got me even more excited to see the final product of my boat.”
The model will be displayed at the Annapolis Maritime Museum & Park this summer, until the end of August!
This project was the culmination of her senior internship with the Leadership Academy and was made possible by a Mini Education Grant from the Chesapeake Bay Trust.
