Globally, one-third of all food produced is wasted— enough to feed every hungry person on the planet. This wasted food accounts for as much as 10 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions while wasting water, energy, and land in the face of mounting food insecurity. Restaurants around the world contribute to as much as 40 percent of this wasted food, and in cities like Washington, D.C., they do so while one in seven local residents are unable to afford nutritious food.

Last Call seeks to reduce restaurant food waste and local food insecurity through making surplus food more affordable. Last Call is a platform and community network that shares discounted restaurant meals through a web application, notifying subscribers in neighboring areas of the extra food available, the restaurant’s location, and the pick-up window. We provide a unique platform that allows people in need to enjoy restaurant-quality meals for a discounted price, while restaurants earn revenue from food that would otherwise be wasted. Last Call is currently focused in Foggy Bottom, and will be expanding to all D.C. college campuses in early 2019, eventually servicing all D.C. wards and other major cities across the country.

TEAM BIOS:

Erin McGeoy, is the co-founder and CEO of Last Call and makes key creative decisions, provides direction to the team, and creates and maintains important strategic relationships. She contributes to the branding, online and physical marketing, and outreach efforts of Last Call. She was inspired to start Last Call after struggling to afford regular meals as a Division 1 water polo player, despite receiving a scholarship at George Washington University, where she studied Marketing and Sustainability. She developed many innovative ways to access more affordable food while in college, and subscribed to as many university listservs as possible to locate and plan her day around events that offered free food.

After she created a Facebook group called “Free Food in Foggy Bottom” to share her strategies with others, Erin realized that her situation was not unique. The group rapidly grew to 500 users at the same time reports on hunger among college students were starting to appear in the media. After closely studying the negative environmental impacts of food waste while working at the World Wildlife Fund, she decided to focus her energy in order to solve what she saw as two huge social inefficiencies: college food insecurity and wasted food.

Erin currently works part-time on the Communications team at the World Wildlife Fund. (LinkedIn)
