Position Overview

The Director of Green Living and Community Engagement will play a pivotal role in advancing Bethesda Green’s mission by developing and leading initiatives that promote sustainable living and foster community engagement. This individual will develop and implement programs, forge strategic partnerships, and serve as a key spokesperson for Bethesda Green in Bethesda, Montgomery County and the DMV. The ideal candidate should possess strong leadership skills, excellent project management abilities, and a deep passion for making a positive impact in our community.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Strategic Planning
    • Work with the Executive Director to set and fulfill the strategic plans and objectives of the Bethesda Green by providing critical insight and guidance.
    • Initiate and set goals for community programs according to the strategic objectives of the organization
  1. Program Development and Management
    • Design and implement innovative programs that promote sustainable living and environmental stewardship.
    • Oversee the planning, execution, and evaluation of community education initiatives and events.
    • Develop metrics to assess the impact of programs and ensure continuous improvement.
  1. Community Engagement
    • Build and maintain strong relationships with community stakeholders, including local businesses, students, schools, government agencies, faith-based groups, and non-profits.
    • Facilitate community outreach activities and collaborative projects that align with Bethesda Green’s mission.
    • Serve as a public representative of Bethesda Green, speaking at events, participating in panels, and engaging with media.
  1. Fundraising and Management
    • Develop and maintain budgets and identify funding sources
    • Create and maintain a portfolio of environmental projects and programs
    • Oversee and provide direct supervision of volunteers, staff
    • Manage grant administration
    • Secure sponsorships and grants to support community engagement activities.
  1. Leadership and Team Collaboration
    • Lead a team of staff and volunteers dedicated to community engagement and education.
    • Foster a collaborative culture and inclusive work environment that values diversity, excellence and innovation.
    • Work closely with the executive team to align community engagement strategies with organizational goals.
  2. Strategic Partnerships
    • Identify and cultivate partnerships with organizations and individuals that can support and enhance Bethesda Green’s initiatives.
    • Collaborate with partners to co-create and co-sponsor programs and events.
    • Participate in and support working groups, advocacy groups, and planning team as agreed with senior management
  3. Communications and Marketing
    • Develop and implement communication strategies to increase awareness and participation in Bethesda Green’s programs.
    • Manage the creation of content for newsletters, social media, and other communication channels.
    • Ensure consistent and effective messaging that reflects Bethesda Green’s values and mission.

Qualifications

  • Highly organized, self-motivated, quick learner able to perform with minimal supervision in a thriving and dynamic environment
  • Bachelor’s degree required. (Master’s degree preferred).
  • 8-10 years of experience (preferred) in community engagement, program management, or a related role.
  • Strong knowledge of sustainability practices and environmental issues.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and inspire diverse audiences.
  • Proven track record of building and maintaining strategic partnerships.
  • Experience in event planning and project management.
  • Familiarity with grant writing and fundraising strategies.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Passion for Bethesda Green’s mission and commitment to promoting sustainable living.

This is a hybrid position. Candidates should live in or be willing to relocate within commuting distance to the office in Bethesda, Maryland. The Director of Green Living and Community Engagement will work three days per week from our office, with the option to work from home the rest of the week.

Compensation

The salary for this position will range from $65,000 to $80,000 per year, commensurate with experience. We provide a generous benefits package, including health insurance, paid vacation, and a retirement plan.
