Bethesda Green’s Environmental Leaders Program
Originally launched in 2014, Bethesda Green’s school-year-long Environmental Leaders Program offers high school students in Montgomery County the opportunity to learn about sustainability and environmental stewardship. Participants gain valuable hands-on experience conducting environmental research, engaging their community on environmental issues, and designing and implementing their own community project to address an environmental challenge. In addition, students gain professional experience working alongside Bethesda Green staff to support the organization’s general programming and have opportunities to learn from the Bethesda Green Innovation Lab’s eco-entrepreneurs.
Applications for the 2022 – 2023 school year have closed.
Check out other ways to get involved through our Teen Science Café.
Program Curriculum
- Internship: Environmental Leaders gain professional experience working at an environmental non-profit as Bethesda Green interns. Environmental Leaders support Bethesda Green programs and outreach. Students are encouraged to accompany staff to meetings and network with industry professionals.
- Independent Project: In the Spring, students complete a semester-long project on a sustainability topic of their choosing with guidance from Bethesda Green staff. By initiating a project from concept phase through to completion, students gain valuable project management skills and make important professional connections in the environmental field.
- Environmental Research & Writing: During the program, Environmental Leaders will be responsible for researching and writing at least one blog post on an environmental topic.
- Community Service: Environmental Leaders participate in stream clean-ups and help plant native species for community rain gardens.
